NRL stars and fans won’t be the only people dressing up in heritage gear this week to celebrate 100 years of Rugby League in Australia.
World champion Town Crier Graham Keating will don his traditional robes as he brings the spirit of a century of Rugby League to life across Sydney tomorrow.
An avid Rugby League supporter, Mr Keating will issue a public invitation for all NRL fans to come along and celebrate Harvey Norman Heritage Round at this week’s matches.
“I hope it echoes down the corridors of time because this is what being a town crier is all about,” Mr Keating said.
“One of my greatest Rugby League moments was back in 1962 when they had the English team playing Australia and Billy Boston, whenever he got the ball, the whole crowd in front would just stand up and shout, and when you get that kind of euphoria and that kind of will of the people around you, it is just such an inspiring scene.
“It’s that type of community and camaraderie and that love of life that Rugby League generates.”
Mr Keating will be in Martin Place tomorrow, Wednesday, April 16, from 11.15am-12.15pm, at Parramatta’s Church St Mall, starting outside Peter Wynn’s Score, from 1.30pm-2.30pm and at Cronulla Mall from 4pm-5pm.
As part of the Heritage Round celebrations, Rugby League will name its Team of the Century at a gala ball at the Royal Hall of Industries at Sydney’s Moore Park on Thursday night.
Harvey Norman will donate $1000 for every try scored to Rugby League’s One Community charities while Wests Tigers will hold a relay from Birchgrove Oval to the SCG on Sunday ahead of their NRL clash against South Sydney.
Every fan who attends a Heritage Round match will also receive a special souvenir poster.
