NSW Opening Round of Toyota Centenary Trophy

Tuesday, June 24

The search for Australia’s best bush footy team moves into full swing tomorrow as NSW teams continue the opening round of the Toyota Centenary Trophy in Orange and Batemans Bay.

Three matches will be played tomorrow with Orange’s Wade Park host to clashes between Group 21 and Group 10 before Group 11 face up to Group 6 later in the day.

A match-up between Group 7 and Group 16 at McKay Park in Batemans Bay rounds out Saturday’s matches before Group 9 and Group 20 provide the highlight clash of the Harvey Norman Regional Celebrations at Wagga Wagga’s Gissing Oval on Wednesday.

The opening two matches of Round 1 were played last weekend at Armidale’s Rugby League Park last weekend, with Group 19 running out 48-42 winners against Group 2 and Group 4 toppling Group 3, 58-32.

Former NRL players starred in both matches with Nathan Blacklock and Jason Ferris helping Group 19 to a late comeback in their match while Group 4’s former Newcastle prop Matt Parsons led from the front in his side’s win against Group 3.

North of the border, the search is almost over for Queensland’s best “grassroots” rugby league team which will meet the winner of the NSW tournament in the Centenary Trophy final prior to State of Origin III.

The Townsville Stingers have already qualified for the QLD final, to be held on the weekend of June 14-15, but it remains to be seen who they will meet in the big one.

The Gold Coast, Brisbane Second Division, Toowoomba, Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast are fighting for the right to play the Stingers.
